Immigrant Microbiome paper published in Cell

November 9, 2018

The first paper from the Immigrant Microbiome Project was recently published in the journal Cell. The study showed that Hmong and Karen immigrants and refugees from Southeast Asia begin losing their native microbes and picking up US-associated strains almost immediately after arriving in the US. This process continued over time, and was compounded in second-generation immigrants. The findings were covered in various media outlets:

The Atlantic

NPR News

The Washington Post

The New York Times
